Human rights defenders

Human rights defenders promote human rights using peaceful means. They document and publicise human rights violations. They talk to governments about their responsibilities, assist victims during trials, and support survivors in overcoming the negative impact of human rights violations. Furthermore, they actively campaign for structural changes in legislation, government intervention or other power structures.

The work of human rights defenders is essential for the respect of human rights. Their work was recognised by the UN in the Declaration on Human Rights Defenders (1998). The UN also established the function of Special Rapporteur about the situation of human rights defenders.

Human rights defenders often face great danger. National and military leaders generally consider them a threat. Intimidation, violence, attempted assassination, false legal charges and depriving human rights defenders of their livelihood are – unfortunately – the order of the day.
